Before you assign it

  • It can give access to others. It allows Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/write, so treat it as a privileged role and assign it through PIM where you can.

What it can do

PermissionWhat it allows
Microsoft.Capacity/*/readAny read operation on anything under Microsoft.Capacity
Microsoft.Capacity/*/actionAny action on anything under Microsoft.Capacity
Microsoft.Capacity/*/writeAny write operation on anything under Microsoft.Capacity
Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/readGet information about a role assignment.
Microsoft.Authorization/roleDefinitions/readGet information about a role definition.
Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/writeCreate a role assignment at the specified scope.
Microsoft.Authorization/roleAssignments/deleteDelete a role assignment at the specified scope.

Assign it

Scope it as tightly as you can: a resource or resource group rather than the whole subscription.

azure cli
az role assignment create \
  --assignee "jane.doe@contoso.com" \
  --role "Reservations Administrator" \
  --scope "/subscriptions/<subscription id>/resourceGroups/<resource group>"

  -RoleDefinitionName "Reservations Administrator" `
  -Scope "/subscriptions/<subscription id>/resourceGroups/<resource group>"

  name: guid(resourceGroup().id, principalId, 'a8889054-8d42-49c9-bc1c-52486c10e7cd')
  properties: {
    roleDefinitionId: subscriptionResourceId('Microsoft.Authorization/roleDefinitions', 'a8889054-8d42-49c9-bc1c-52486c10e7cd')
